BOOK BASH!
CHAMPION
Dean Murdock
I’m a former three-term Saanich Councillor. I’m running for Mayor in the fall election.
When my kids were young, I loved reading to them and doing different character voices. Now that they’re older, I love hearing about the books they are reading. It’s amazing to explore the world they are discovering through reading. What a gift!

Favourite Book:
The book I’ve read three times and will almost certainly read again is Larry’s Party by Carol Shields. I’ve read it at different stages in my life, and it has meant something different to me every time.
What does LITERACY mean to you?
Literacy is freedom. Beyond reading words on a page, literacy takes us to new worlds and inspires imagination. Literacy gives us hope and fills us with aspiration for a better future.
What books do you recommend?
There are so many great books out there! I like a variety of fiction, non-fiction, humour, and biographies. Some of the ones I’ve loved reading:
The Sacred Balance by David Suzuki
The Happy City by Charles Montgomery
Five Little Indians by Michelle Good
A Promised Land by Barack Obama
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
The Way the Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald
Washington Black by Esi Edugyan
Favourite quote:
“So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act.”
Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Suess
